A Harvest of Goodness

James 3:17-18 (NLT) “17 But the wisdom from heaven is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no partiality and is always sincere. 18 And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of goodness.”

Popular wisdom thinks that the qualities James is talking about – purity, loving peace, gentleness, willingness to yield, mercy and sincerity – are either outdated or signs of weakness. Yet if we examine our own behavior as well as the behavior of those around us, how can we not conclude that these qualities come rather from an extraordinary strength of character? Instead of being signs of weakness, they are the result of diligently planting seeds of peace and wisdom. They come from heaven - from the Spirit of God. However, they do not magically appear in a person’s life once a person receives new life in Jesus. The law of the Spirit is the law of the harvest. Seeds must first be planted before the plants can be harvested. The seed is the word of God. The word of God is watered by prayer. If you are a child of God, you want to see a harvest of goodness in your life. Let’s ask the Lord of the harvest to create a harvest of goodness in our lives that will bring him glory.
