Love and Obedience

1 John 5:3-5 “This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.”
1 John 4:7-8 “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
Romans 5:5 “God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.”

The Bible says that God’s thoughts are higher than our thoughts by a factor of the height of the heavens above the earth. However, we have hope because He wants us to know His thoughts and all of His ways, and He patiently waits for us to turn to Him in anticipation of when He can pour out on us all that He has in store. May we get enough of a glimpse of the love of God for us that we throw down at His feet everything that we value and hold so dear. Nothing can compare to one look from His face toward us. One touch from His hand can wipe away a lifetime of defeat and bitterness and walking in the ways of the world. One word from His mouth can move heaven and earth. May we be those who seek Him, not satisfied with anything less than His presence and power in our lives. What a privilege it is to be among those who obey the Lord! Yet, how often do we struggle with obeying His commands! Our response to our failure to obey might be to try to work harder next time or to repent with tears and promise not to fail again. Disobedience is not, however, a discipline problem but a love problem. To love God is to obey Him. Only those who know God through Jesus Christ have been given this love because love originates with God, not mankind. In fact the Spirit pours out God’s love in our hearts. This love is so powerful that obedience to God’s commands becomes easy. That’s right! Obedience without love is not possible. Love is the fire of obedience to God. If you are having a problem obeying the Lord in an area of your life, begin to talk to Him about your love. Let’s do that now. Lord, show us where our love for You has grown cold and old. Re-fire our hardened hearts and pour out your love in us in a brand new way today!
